Hear the World - Week 17.
In this programme Cuban salsa, Argentinian big band music and innovative Brazilian samba rock.
The Cuban salsa band Orquesta Aragon, which formed as far back as 1939, starts the programme. The repertoire covers various Cuban styles, but the group is mainly known as a fantastic salsa orchestra. At the 2009 Music Meeting, Orquesta Aragon performed with the well-known singer Afia Mala from Togo as guest. She immersed herself in Cuban salsa and discovered the Afro-Cuba connection, the African roots in this music.
More music from a large ensemble is brought by Guillermo Klein y los Guachos. Guillermo Klein is an Argentinian pianist and composer who peppers his big band music with influences from contemporary classical music and various styles from his home country Argentina, mainly tango. Klein is also known for his harmonic and stylistic innovations in his arrangements and in his piano playing.
The third group is the enormously popular Brazilian band Pedro Luis e A Parede from Rio de Janeiro. Under the leadership of the well-known singer-guitarist Pedro Luis Teixeira de Oliveira, the group plays a wilful and innovative mix of rock, rap, samba and funk.
Hear the world is hosted by Dheera Sujan.
