Newsline - Christmas day attack prompts security overhaul

On air: 31 December 2009 15:25

More about:

Newsline 31 December 2009: Will new security measures harm the airline industry? We travel to a muslim community in predominantly Catholic Mexico; and we visit Kosovo, 10 years after the end of the war.

Christmas day attack prompts new security measures
As US President Barack Obama awaits reports on the security lapses that enabled a Nigerian man to carry explosives onto a flight from Amsterdam to Detroit, the focus is now on new security measures at airports. The Netherlands and Nigeria have both announced they'll introduced body scanners - and other countries look set to follow suit. So how will this affect passengers hoping to get away for New Year breaks? And, can an already struggling aviation industry withstand the new changes? Newsline's Marijke Peters talks to independent aviation security expert Chris Yates.

Islam on the rise among indigenous Mexicans
Mexico is a predominantly Catholic country, but the state of Chiapas is home to a small but steadily growing Muslim community as well. There have always been Muslims in Mexico, but they were usually immigrants from Africa and the Middle East. But, since the Zapatista uprising in Chiapas 15 years ago, more and more of the indigenious Mayan and Tzotzil people have been converting to Islam. From Mexico, Jan Albert Hootsen sent us this report.

Millenium dreams: Kosovo
It's the last of our series asking what's become of the dreams people had when the new millenium dawned ten years ago. Today, we visit Kosovar Bujar Zabergja, who lived in the Netherlands for five years in the 1990s. He returned home in 1997 amid rising tensions between Serbia and the ethinic Albanian majority in Kosovo. Ten years ago Bujar sat in a refugee camp in Macedonia, dreaming of a better future - for himself and for Kosovo. Radio Netherlands' Hans Jaap Melissen travelled to a wintery Pristina to and filed this report.

Great article, well written.

I am the MD of text-lock and we are soon launching our new product text-padlock, which is a padlock which can be operated remotely by mobile phone, leaving an electronic signature of anyone using or requesting access. Please see http://www.text-lock.com/text-lock_GSM_SMS_padlock.html for more details on the product.

I welcome your opinions on this and would be fascinated to see your views in this blog.

It is really terrible that on Chirstmas day prople is feeling fear of attack which is the result of the several attack. We have to be alert at every public place specially on festivals day. And also government should also take some good safety precaution to avoid this.
