Newsline - 2 March 2010: An Islamic scholar issues a fatwa against terrorists. The Dutch Freedom Party looks set to make waves in local elections. Homosexuals are welcome in the "Old Catholic Church."
Fatwa against terrorism
One of the world's most prominent Islamic scholars has issued a religious decree in London, saying terrorists are non-believers. Muhammad Tahir ul-Qadri says his Fatwa is the first of its kind, because it condemns Muslim extremists and their radical interpretation of the religion. Listen to an interview with theologian Dr Mohammed Ghaly from Leiden University.
Campaigning with the Freedom Party
The Netherlands goes to the polls on Wednesday for local elections. And all eyes are on right-wing populist Geert Wilders' Freedom Party. The PVV's on the ballot in only two cities, but its anti-immigrant, anti-Islam message is attracting followers in Almere and The Hague. Listen to political editor John Tyler on the campaign trail with Freedom Party candidate Siste Fritsma.
Gays welcome in the Old Catholic Church
Gay organisations in the Netherlands have announced more protests for Catholic church services next Sunday, after gays were refused Holy Communion in the southern city of Den Bosch last weekend. It is a sentiment that is not shared by the small Old Catholic church in the Netherlands. With only 6,000 members, the church has progressive ideas on celibacy and the roles of women and gays in church. Listen to an interview with Bishop Dick Schoon of the Old Catholic Church.
