Bangkok braces for more violence
Anti-government protesters in Bangkok have defied an ultimatum Monday to leave their fortified camp in the Thai capital, and the entire nation is bracing for more violence as neither side shows signs of backing down. Our correspondent Michel Maas is in Bangkok and he checks in with the latest news.
Iran signs enrichment deal
Iran has just signed a deal with Turkey and Brazil which may decrease tensions over its nuclear programme. Under the agreement, Tehran will send 1200 kilograms of low enriched uranium to Turkey, and then the US, Russia and France will deliver 120 kilograms of fuel enriched to 20 percent. Peter Jenkins, associate fellow at the Geneva Centre for Security Policy and former UK ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency, tells Newsline what the deal means for US calls for sanctions.
Amnesty: investigate Sri Lanka war crimes
Amnesty International is calling on the UN to investigate human rights violations during the final months of the war between the Tamil Tigers and the Sri Lankan government army. Tens of thousands of civilians died or were displaced in the final stages of the war, Amnesty claims, while some 80,000 people are still in refugee camps. Amnesty's Madhu Malhotra told NL's Johan van Slooten that these civilians simply want justice.
