HEAR THE WORLD "...Dutch singer Droeh Nankoe has a Surinamese-Hindustani background. He performs baithak gana, a popular Hindustani music style in Surinam.
Then it is the turn of the immensely popular Indian singer Anup Jalota. He sings a light classical repertoire and is a master of the ghazal love song. He is also a brilliant talent in the bhajan, the devotional Hindu song.
Dhruba Ghosh is a grand master on the sarangi, a northern Indian string instrument which closely imitates the sound spectrum of the human voice. He sings the evening raga Jaijaivanti.
The southern Indian raga tradition is represented by two top violinists, brother and sister Lalgudi Krishnan and Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi.
Finally, we have the brilliant Dutch cellist Saskia Rao-de Haas with her Raga Mala Quartet. She lives in Delhi and introduces the cello into Indian raga music. Saskia Rao-de Haas wrote a fantastic string quartet piece entitled Muhkani, meaning “facial expressions”. The structure of this exciting string quartet is based on north Indian raga.
Before all these wonderful performers at the Amsterdam India Festival, India’s most famous raga musician, sitar player Ravi Shankar, starts this programme with a unique recording made by Radio Netherlands Worldwide in 1957." [RNW-host Dheera Sujan]
