St. Alexander Nevsky cathedral
The world famous St. Alexander Nevsky cathedral in Sofia, Bulgary has been named after the founder of the Russian empire, and was created (1882) in honour to the Russian soldiers who died during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878.
LIVE AT THE CONCERTGEBOUW “… Alexander Nevsky was the heroic founder of the great Russian empire. In the 13th century he defeated the Swedish army on the northern front on the banks of the river Neva. Centuries later Alexander drove the German armies back on the western front. When Hitler’s armies posed a new threat for Russia in the 1930’s, the stories of Alexander’s legendary conquests served as moral support for the Russian people. Film director Sergei Eisenstein and composer Sergei Prokofiev worked closely together on their project ‘Alexander Nevsky.’ Eisenstein delivered a visual stage with almost operatic qualities and Prokofiev composed highly effective visually inspired music. Prokofiev’s film score became a classic in the concert hall as a cantata in seven movements…" [RNW-host Hans Haffmans]

It's exciting to be able to experience a piece of culture that is different from my own. The music is upifting, soothing-and carried me into an imaginary world of beatuty-reassuring the existence of hope. Yvette Bonner, Soprano is Incredible re: The Song without Words"!
Hi! Living in northern California, I have just discovered your web site and tuned into the Concertgebouw concert featuring Prokofiev's "Alexander Nevsky" with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra under Vasily Petrenko. What a marvelous treat! Perhaps I will have more astute comments in the future, but my first one is to thank you for this marvelous service. Let me add that the whole program that included Joep Franssens's 'Grace' and Beethoven's violin concerto was inspiring. You have given the planet a great gift of musical joy. Jim Gaffey
