The UNASUR group of South American countries has begun meeting in the Ecuadorean capital Quito to discuss aid for Haiti following its disastrous earthquake.
Conference host Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa says the issue of middle and long-term aid will be central to the discussions. He believes Haiti's institutions should be strengthened to ensure that the country can make progress without relying on foreign powers.
Many South American countries are critical of the presence of United States troops in Haiti. Haiti's President René Preval and Colombian President Alvaro Uribe are in Quito. Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez cancelled his trip to the UNASUR summit at the last moment.

Helping rebuild Haiti should be left in the hands of Latin American/Caribbean nations. Countries like the US, France, Canada, Germany have done enough damage through the years, all in the name of "humanitarian aid". These countries have helped themselves but not the Haitians.
