Tymoshenko to contest Ukraine election result

Published on 9 February 2010 - 4:36pm
More about:

Ukraine's Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko is refusing to accept the outcome of the presidential second round run-off.

Ukrainian newspaper Pravda says she has instructed lawyers to contest the election victory of pro-Russian opposition leader Viktor Yanukovich. With almost 99 percent of the votes counted, he is leading Ms Tymoshenko by nearly three percent.

Members of the political bloc loyal to the prime minister say there is evidence of irregularities during Sunday's election and are demanding recounts at some polling stations. International observers, however, have praised the poll as free and fair.
