The number of foreigners in Spain has increased five-fold over the past decade according to official figures.
In 2009, there were 5.6 million foreigners living in Spain: in 1999, the figure was under one million.
About 2.5 million of them are from other European Union countries, nearly two million come from the Americas and nearly one million are from Africa. A further 200,000 are from non-EU European countries.
The highest numbers of migrants come from Morocco, Romania and Ecuador.
