The inhabitants of the Indonesian city of Padang say many buildings collapsed in last week's earthquake because they were badly constructed. Corruption is allegedly the reason that many building projects were not required to meet official construction norms. Older buildings, such as
those built by the Dutch, survived the earthquake.
The official death toll in the earthquake in Sumatra now stands at a thousand. The sheer size of the disaster is making it difficult to reach all the victims. People in remote areas can only obtain aid goods by helicopter. Many people are living in tents and have still not received any assistance.
One week after the earthquake there is little hope of finding any more survivors under the rubble. Foreign aid workers are now packing their bags and heading for home.
