Reburial request for Einstein's first wife

Published on 9 February 2010 - 3:27pm
More about:

A relative of Albert Einstein's first wife, Mileva Maric, wants her remains to be reburied in Serbia.

Mileva died in 1948 in the Swiss city of Zurich, where she lies buried in a mass grave. Her cousin, Dragisa Maric, argues that Mileva should have her final resting place in the Serbian city of Novi Sad, where her parents were buried.

Little importance was given to Mileva Maric's remains until the Serbian embassy placed a plaque at the Zurich cemetery last June.

Mileva was a gifted scientist in her own right and some have argued that she made a significant contribution to Einstein's revolutionary theory of relativity. She married Einstein in 1903 and they had three children together. The couple divorced in 1919, after a period of separation.
