The struggles that Wiwa and the Ogoni took up twenty years ago and came to a head fourteen years ago is really the same struggle, the same issues that are going on in Nigeria today. The settlement indicates there was a strong case against Shell, but $15.5 million is a pittance compared to the actual profits of Shell. The settlement does not resolve the outstanding issues between Shell and the Ogoni people. (The plaintiffs did not argue for the Ogoni people.)
