Most welcome, ( Grin ) at the comment on 'peasants and serfs' ...which of course a democracy is supposed not to have.
I would suggest that the real problem is as always, that Democracy requires an INFORMED electorate. And that means one not easily swayed or convinced by either demagogue or preacher. Tyranny flourishes only amidst IGNORANCE and a people 'Ultimately receive such government as they deserve" , to quote Tom Jefferson.
You 'citizens" want to be proud of your Republic? Then BECOME citizens, rather than overweight, complacent, generally uninformed and prone to following the 'guidance" of either so-called journalists or preachers, neither of which has authority OR moral highground to spew their nonsense..unless of course YOU allow it.
