Saturday 26 May RNW - NEWS AND ANALYSIS FROM THE NETHERLANDS IN 10 LANGUAGES, WORLDWIDE 24/7 ON RADIO, TV AND ONLINE
David Berridge 5 October 2009 - 10:53pm
This is not a major surprise that Rio won this bid. Brazil will be the third BRIC country to host the Games, and there is a precedent for South America hosting a global champoinship with Uruguay having the first World Cup competition played there in 1938. This is in some small part a reward for the Brazilian government not having pursued the crazy idea a few years ago to try and develop their own nuclear arsenal. Steve is absolutely correct in the real test for Rio, in what will be done by Brazil to address the crime, slums, violence against children, and massive poverty existing there. The success of the longterm effects of the Games will be determined by this criteria.
