Saturday 26 May RNW - NEWS AND ANALYSIS FROM THE NETHERLANDS IN 10 LANGUAGES, WORLDWIDE 24/7 ON RADIO, TV AND ONLINE
thinker 24 June 2010 - 4:06pm / india

the UN Child Rights Code states that children grow secure and psychologically stable with their parents. Adoption , foster care, can be an option only in case the parents cannot take care of their children; inter-country adoption should be the last resort,if all other means of rehabilitating the child within the country fail.

developing countries such as China, india, ethopia, etc send children out, as it saves them money, which they would require to spend by establishing children's homes, support to single women and families in distress. The developed world has an a huge demand for children, as fertility rates are falling, lifestyle issues, etc. Demand for babies outstrips the supply, its here that the problem begins. Babies are thus not given to the most deserving parents, but those who can pay more money.

In the west today, many adoptees from india suffer enormously; they lack an identity, they feel less confident and insecure, there is subtle discrimination even if the adoptive parents do their best, society does not give them equal opportunities. many children are trafficked, these children never settle down in adoptive families; invariably stolen children have sub-conscience memories and they are angry about not being understood and fight the adoptive parents, making life m miserable for all. there is no record of 'failed' adoptions. the adoption lobby keeps the myth of adoption as a good child protection measure, its they who build the image of adoption helping to solve the problem of poverty in developing countries. The opposite is true. Adoption has to be seen as the last measure, used sparingly.
