Wilders criticised for language in parliament

Published on 21 September 2011 - 10:33pm
More about:

Deputy Prime Minister Maxime Verhagen has criticised the language used by Freedom Party (PVV) leader Geert Wilders in the Dutch parliament on Wednesday.

“If it was meant to be funny, he missed the mark,” he said. Mr Verhagen went on to explain it was up to the speaker of the house to decide whether Mr Wilders’ words were acceptable.

MPs from all sides of the house expressed dissatisfaction with Mr Wilders’ performance during the first day of the parliamentary debate on the budget.

The leaders of the Labour, Socialist, Green Left, Democrats D66 and Christian Union parties all objected during the debate to what they described as Mr Wilders’ lack of respect when talking about subjects such as Islam and his fellow MPs.

Christian Democrat leader Sybrand van Haersma said: “If you have freedom of speech, you’ve also got to have respect. I didn't hear that from Mr Wilders.”
