War crimes suspect Vojislav Seselj has not had his rights violated, judges ruled on Thursday in an appeal by the Serbian to abort his trial. He has been imprisoned in The Hague for the past eight-and-a-half years by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia on charges of crimes against humanity.
In his request, Seselj referred to the European Court of Human Rights, arguing that his time in custody has been excessive. However, Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz responded that there is no time limit for pre-trial detention in the jurisprudence of the UN tribunal.
The case against the Serbian has dragged on since 2003 due to various upsets including allegations of witness tampering, a hunger strike and contempt of court charges.
