Veiled women cause concern about airport security

Published on 16 August 2010 - 9:16am
More about:

Caretaker Transport Minister Camiel Eurlings wants to know whether veiled Muslim women are able to pass through customs at Dutch airports without removing their veils.

Concerns about airport security have been raised because of a YouTube film showing three veiled women passing through an airport gate without showing their faces at Trudeau Airport in Canada. The incident has caused a great deal of commotion in the Canadian media.

Passengers and airport personnel say sometimes Muslim women are not asked to show their faces, even at customs, writes Dutch daily newspaper De Telegraaf.

The Dutch military police who are responsible for airport security in the Netherlands, deny this. They say veiled women are asked into a separate room where they remove their veils in the presence of a female officer.
