Vancouver bans “racist” Black Peter

Published on 26 November 2011 - 6:48pm
More about:

Sinterklaas, the Dutch Santa, will not be allowed to bring along any of his servants known as Black Peter to the Canadian city of Vancouver this year due to complaints of racism.

Members of Vancouver’s Afro-Canadian community filed a complaint arguing that the Black Peter figure is an outdated and offensive racist stereotype. As a result, the organisers have decided that Sinterklaas will make his entry next Saturday without his usual band of black servants.

The yearly event in Vancouver draws between 400 and 600 Canadians of Dutch descent.
