Van Bommel stays with AC Milan

Published on 18 May 2011 - 12:14pm
More about:

Dutch midfielder Mark van Bommel has extended his contract with AC Milan for another season. The Italian captain announced today that Van Bommel has signed a new deal until June 2012.

“I’m happy with life in Milan. If I’m asked to stay, I couldn’t think of any reason why I shouldn’t take up the offer,” the 34-year old Dutch player said last week.

Van Bommel made a surprising move halfway during the season when he left Bayern Munich in January to join AC Milan. Louis van Gaal, who was the trainer at the time, didn’t need the midfielder anymore.

His departure stirred up considerable unrest among the Munich squad. Despite being sent off in his first game with the Italians, Van Bommel’s combative presence became a major asset for the ‘Rossoneri’, as Milan's Black and Reds are commonly called.

The Dutchman had been linked with a move to England but he has opted to give Italy's Serie A premier league one more year: “The Serie A is a fantastic competition – it’s really gratifying.” Earlier Van Bommel played for Fortuna Sittard, PSV Eindhoven and Barcelona.

Milan are still mulling over whether to offer veteran midfield trio Clarence Seedorf, Andrea Pirlo and Massimo Ambrosini new deals.
