The winner of the Giro, the Tour of Italy, is Canadian racing cyclist Ryder Hesjesdal of the Garmin team, who took the pink jersey from Spaniard Joaquim Rodriguez in the final 28-kilometre time trial in Milan.
Belgian racing cyclist Thomas de Gendt of the Dutch team Vacansoleil-DCM came in third, knocking defending champion Michele Scarponi into fourth place. The Belgian came first in the race’s hardest mountain climb, the Stelvio, on Saturday.
The Belgian racer is still perplexed by his success, saying: “Three days ago, I was battling to get into the top 10. It’s unbelievable, it’s only my second big tour.”
The best Dutchman, Tom-Jelte Slagter came in 30th place. It is the first time in 17 years that no Italian cyclists got a place on the podium. Nevertheless the fastest cyclist of the day was Italian Marco Pinotti.
