Utrecht University is the highest-ranking Dutch academic institution on the annual comparative list compiled in Shanghai.
It is 50th on the 'Academic Ranking of World Universities'. Academics at Shanghai compile the list, comparing the number of publications issued and distinctions received by about a thousand universities.
The second Dutch university is that of Leiden, which is no. 70 in the list. The top-three is all-American, with Harvard, Berkely and Stanford.
