UN leader Ban Ki-moon on Friday called on Argentina and Britain to avoid an "escalation" in tensions over the disputed Falkland islands.

His appeal came as Argentina's Foreign Miniser Hector Timerman made an official complaint to the United Nations about what he called Britain's "militarization" of the South Atlantic. Britain says it is only carrying out routine operations.
