Dutch police have arrested a witness for the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). Shefqet Kabashi was part of the Kosovo Liberation Army (UÇK). He was called to testify in the case against Ramush Haradinaj, a former prime minister of Kosovo suspected of war crimes.
In 2007, Mr Kabashi refused to testify against Mr Haradinaj who was eventually acquitted for lack of evidence. The ICTY says Mr Kabashi’s testimony is relevant to the appeal in the Haradinaj case which began on Thursday.
During the initial trial, prosecutors faced major problems when witnesses refused to come to court, saying they were being threatened. The judges handed down their ruling without giving the prosecution time to get crucial witnesses to The Hague.
