The 15-nation UN Security Council has agreed on a statement on the Syria crisis, giving strong backing to UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan's efforts to end the bloodshed, diplomats said.

The statement was to be adopted at 1400 GMT on Wednesday, a Security Council diplomat told AFP.
