The driver of one of the two passenger trains involved in Saturday's head-on collision in Amsterdam apparently ran a red signal, Transport Minister Melanie Schultz van Haegen told Dutch parliament on Monday.

A preliminary investigation carried out by inspectors from the transport ministry indicated the driver of the slow train “ignored a stop signal”. The minister said she wanted to await the result of a further investigation to see if the initial findings can be confirmed.

The police are also conducting a separate enquiry into the crash, in which 117 people were injured. On Sunday, a 68-year-old woman died of injuries sustained in the accident.  

The express from Den Helder to Amsterdam collided with a slow train from Amsterdam to Uitgeest just before 6:30 pm local time on Saturday between Amsterdam Sloterdijk and Amsterdam Central stations.
