The Netherlands could be hosting the third – and for the time being last - summit on nuclear security in 2014.
In a letter to parliament Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal says a decision will be taken by government leaders at a second summit in South Korea at the end of March. Mr Rosenthal writes that the Dutch government has reacted positively to the request from the current chair South Korea to host the next summit.
The delegates will discuss measures to reduce the threat of nuclear terrorism and crack down on the illegal trade in nuclear materials. “Nuclear terrorism is one of the greatest and most acute threats to global security,” writes Mr Rosenthal.
Prime Minister Mark Rutte will lead the Dutch delegation to the summit in Seoul. The first nuclear security summit was held in 2010 after US President Barack Obama initiated the idea.
