Fog in many parts of the Netherlands is set to cause problems again for the fourth consecutive day on Tuesday although the trouble looks like being less serious than on Monday.

The Dutch automobile association says the morning rush-hour is worse than usual with extra lanes being closed on motorways because monitoring cameras cannot peer through the mist.

Although the area around Amsterdam and to the north of the country is struggling with patches of thick fog, the situation in the south is not so bad, with visibility of over 200 metres. The morning traffic jams are reported not to be as bad as on Monday.

Air travel disrupted
Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport is bracing itself for more cancellations and delays today. Travellers are being advised to get up-to-date information from the internet and teletext before leaving home.

Schiphol has reduced capacity on runways but ground radar means aircraft can continue to take off and land safely. On Monday, dozens of mainly European flights were cancelled.

Rotterdam Airport is also experiencing problems and, so far today, no flights have taken off or landed. Passengers are being checked in at the airport and then taken to Amsterdam by bus.
