Colombia’s armed forces chief Edgar Cely says recent statements made by Tanja Nijmeijer constitute enough evidence to bring her to trial. The 32-year-old Dutch citizen joined Colombia’s FARC rebel group in 2002.
Her comments were made in a video shown by Radio Netherlands Worldwide in November. Admiral Cely said on Colombian radio that she has admitted being involved in an armed struggle against Colombia and that this is a crime.
Colombian newspaper reports say it is now certain that Ms Nijmejier survived an army bombardment and subsequent raid on a FARC camp in the Colombian jungle where she was based. Rebel commander Mono Jojoy and a number of FARC fighters were killed in the attack which took place in September.
