Taliban militants attacked Jalalabad airport, one of NATO's main airbases, in eastern Afghanistan, officials said, but there was no immediate word on casualties.

"I can confirm that there has been an attack on one of the (security) posts at the airport," said provincial government spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdylzoi on Saturday.

An AFP reporter nearby said he heard explosions, shooting and helicopters flying overhead.
