Storm leads to cancelled flights

Published on 4 February 2011 - 11:07am
More about:

Strong winds have caused delays or cancellations at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport. A spokesperson for the airport says flights are being delayed by half an hour on average, while 20 have been cancelled.

Passengers are advised to consult teletext, the website of their airline or contact the airline before leaving home. Because of the south-westerly direction of the winds, some runways had to be closed at Schiphol.

Similarly train services have been affected by the winds. The Dutch railway company NS has split routes from the north of the country to the south to avoid unnecessary delays. Services from Amsterdam to Den Helder in the north of the Netherlands have been disrupted.

The Dutch meteorological office KNMI predicts more stormy south-westerly winds tonight with gusts of up to 85 kilometres per hour.
