The busiest day of the year at Amsterdam Schiphol airport has not caused any great problems. It’s holiday time and, to avoid the bad weather here, the Dutch are heading en masse to sunnier destinations, such as Spain, Greece and Turkey.
Air traffic controllers oversaw 1,400 flights carrying 171,000 people. Entertainers helped people queuing while away the time and car park attendants made sure people found a spot quickly.
The expected chaos failed to materialise, the police report, saying the mass exodus went smoothly. Travel agents had urged people to show up well in time to avoid any complications during check-in.
