Dutch police have seized 8.2 kilograms of cannabis and nearly 7 kilograms of heroin in a major international operation along a number of routes popular among drug tourists. Hundreds of Dutch police officers took part in Operation Etoile which was also carried out in Belgium, Luxembourg and France.

In the Netherlands, about 6.5 kilograms of heroin was seized in a house search in the city of Maastricht and seven people were arrested.

Between Tuesday and Sunday police officers conducted extensive checks of vehicles travelling in the direction of Belgium along the A16 motorway. A drug runner carrying 7.8 kilograms of cannabis was arrested on the A16. Most of the other seizures along the motorway involved small quantities of drugs. The A16 is a popular route among foreign drug tourists.
