The city of Rotterdam has put itself forward as a candidate to host the Youth Olympic Games in 2018. The Dutch sports umbrella organisation NOC*NSF submitted the application to the International Olympic Committee on Wednesday.
Rotterdam and the NOC*NSF will announce definite plans for the bid in the summer. In January next year, the IOC will compile its shortlist. It’s expected that the final decision will be announced in June 2013.
The Youth Olympics are for 15 to 18-year-olds and were first held in 2010 in Singapore. A winter edition took place in January this year in Innsbruck, Austria.
The event involves much more than sport. Apart from the 28 Olympic categories, the 12-day programme also includes cultural and educational activities for both the 3,500 contestants and the local young people.
