PSV and FC Twente on to next round of Europa League

Published on 4 November 2011 - 12:23am
More about:

Both PSV and FC Twente have reached the next round of the Europa League after four group matches.

Eindhoven club PSV started trailing two points behind (3-1) in its home game against Hapoel Tel Aviv but eventually played the Israeli team to a 3-3 draw, enough for a place in the next round.

Kevin Strootman scored the deciding equaliser just before the final whistle, after the visiting team had been reduced to ten players due to a red card.

Giorgino Wijnaldum and Ola Toivonen were the other two players to score for the Eindhoven team.

FC Twente also had to work hard in its home game against Danish club Odense. It was initially trailing one goal behind, but an own goal by a Danish player and a goal by Denny Landzaat meant the Enschede team was back in the lead before half time.

The Danes scored the equaliser in the second half, but Leroy Fer scored the deciding goal (3-2) for FC Twente just eight minutes before the final whistle.

Alkmaar team AZ wasted its 2-0 lead in an away game against Austria Wien. When Rasmus Elm and Pontus Wernbloom both scored a goal AZ appeared to be in for an easy night, but the Austrian team scored two goals in the second half, and the match ended in a 2-2 draw.

However, AZ can still make it to the next round. It is now in second place in its group, one point ahead of Austria.
