The construction of a luxury holiday home in Mozambique belonging to the heir to the Dutch throne, Prince Willem-Alexander, and his wife Princess Máxima has been completed. However, Prime Minister Mark Rutte has informed parliament that the house has not yet been sold.
The prince and princess decided to sell the property at the end of 2009 following severe criticism about their plans for a holiday home in Mozambique. The royal couple were reportedly fed up with the continuing discussion about their participation in the project on the Machangulo peninsula. The prince even said the negative publicity was giving him sleepless nights.
In response to criticism in parliament about the project, Prince Willem-Alexander transferred his interest in the development - which encompasses more properties - to a local legal entity in the summer of 2009. This was supposed to create more distance between himself and the project, but critics were not satisfied. The entity in question has now been dissolved, the prime minister said.
