A Dutch policewoman is in hospital in critical condition after being stabbed.
Police in The Hague were warned about "a threatening situation" on Saturday night and were confronted with a man armed with a knife. He was shot by a policeman. Despite being injured the man tried to walk away and stabbed the policewoman in passing, after which he collapsed and died.
The Hague police commissioner Henk van Essen confirmed to local broadcaster Omroep West that the shooting and stabbing incident is being investigated by national police, as is done on every occasion when police use firearms. "I'm looking forward to the outcome with confidence," Commissioner Van Essen said.
