Top Dutch Premier League side FC Twente today confirmed rumours that manager Co Adriaanse is leaving the club.
Adriaanse’s departure is not due to disappointing results. Twente is riding high near the top of the Dutch Premier League (Eredivisie), only five points behind leader AZ.
At a press conference, Twente chairman Joop Munsterman said that there had been “differences of opinion on football” between the manager and the rest of the staff. At first, it looked as though these could be resolved, but they eventually led to Mr Adriaanse’s resignation.
One-year contract
Co Adriaanse took over at FC Twente at the start of the season, on a one-year contract. Mr Munsterman described the termination of the contract as “a disappointment” for the club.
Former coach of England’s national squad Steve McClaren has been tipped as Adriaanse’s successor. McClaren was manager of FC Twente from 2008 to 2010 when the club became league champions. The club chairman would only confirm that negotiations with McClaren are ongoing, saying that “a few points” still needed to be discussed.
Last season, Belgian Michel Preud'homme led Twente to victory in the Dutch FA Cup.
