A ban on smoking is being flaunted in over half of Dutch pubs and discos.
The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority has found ash trays back on the tables in 51 percent of establishments. Last summer, this figure was only 28 percent.
In restaurants, hotels, cafés, theatres and sports clubs, the ban is largely being adhered to. In restaurants and sports clubs, only three percent are flaunting the ban and this figure is lower for the other types of establishments.
The smoking ban was introduced on 1 July 2008 in bars and restaurants in the Netherlands.
In November the government lifted the ban for pubs which are smaller than 70 square metres and staffed by the owner. Other establishments have to observe the ban.
