Over 40,000 walkers join Four Days Marches

Published on 18 July 2011 - 9:00pm
More about:

The International Four Days March will begin on Tuesday with 42,812 participants. Walkers have been gathering in Nijmegen since Sunday in preparation for the 95th edition of the annual journey which goes through the Dutch provinces of Gelderland, Brabant and Limburg.

Organisers had expected a low turn-out this year due to the wet weather conditions battering much of the Netherlands. However, registration has actually gone up this year from 39,933 walkers in 2010. Record attendance was seen in 2003 when 44,812 people from around the world participated in the event.

The International Four Days Marches is the largest marching event in the world. Its aim is to promote walking as a sport and accessible form of exercise.
