One billion Dutch guilders still in circulation

Published on 23 December 2010 - 2:44pm
More about:

Nine years after the introduction of the euro, almost a billion euros-worth of Dutch guilders are still in circulation, according to DNB, the Dutch central bank.

There are still banknotes in the old Dutch currency worth 495 million euros, and coins worth 500 million euros, a DNB spokesperson said. Coins can no longer be handed in, but the central bank will still exchange banknotes until 2032.

The German central bank says that 13.45 billion Deutschmarks are still in circulation – equivalent to 6.8 billion euros – also about evenly divided between coins and notes. Over the past year the Bundesbank has exchanged 180 million Deutschmarks for euros.

The euro was introduced in 12 European countries on 1 January 2002. The Dutch guilder was worth 0.45 euros.
