Oldest Dutch person had special genes

Published on 15 October 2011 - 8:40pm
More about:

A Dutch woman who died aged 115 had special genes that protected her against dementia, say researchers at the VU University Amsterdam.

The researchers, who were given permission to examine her body, found no markers for Alzheimer's disease or dementia in her DNA. The research was presented at a conference in Canada.

Hendrikje van Andel-Schipper died of cancer in 2005 and is thought to have been the eldest Dutch person ever.
