Nigel de Jong back in Dutch squad

Published on 26 January 2011 - 5:31pm
More about:

Nigel de Jong is back in Holland's national squad. Manager Bert van Marwijk has added him to the line-up for a friendly match against Austria on 9 February.

De Jong, a midfielder with Manchester City, had not been selected since October and missed the European Championship qualification matches against Moldova and Sweden.

He was dropped after he broke the leg of opponent Hatem Ben Arfa from Newcastle United in a Premier League game.

De Jong also sparked controversy for his performance during the 2010 World Cup Final against Spain - images of his karate-style challenge on Spanish midfielder Xavi Alonso were replayed the world over.

Other players selected by Van Marwijk for the Austria match are FC Twente's Luuk de Jong and FC Utrecht's Kevin Strootman.
