Statistics Netherlands, the Dutch statistics office, reports that the total length of all Dutch roads combined is 137,000 kilometres. The office calculated that nearly 7,000 kilometres’ worth of roads was added in the past ten years, mostly in the form of streets in new residential areas.

The Netherlands boasts an average of about 5,000 metres of road per square kilometre. The four major cities - Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague - have a road density of between 10,000 metres (Rotterdam) and 13,000 metres (The Hague) per square kilometre. The city of Leiden has the highest density with 16,000 metres and Schiermonnikoog the lowest, with a mere 1,000 metres per square kilometre.
