National Queen's Day celebrations ‘a success’

Published on 30 April 2011 - 10:26am
More about:

The Dutch Royal Family celebrated Queen Beatrix' official birthday in the southernmost province of Limburg on Saturday. Accompanied by her sons, daughters in law and her sister, Princess Margriet, and her family, the Queen visited the town of Thorn and, later in the day, the city of Weert.

The authorities described the walkabouts as a success, saying they looked back with satisfaction on a peaceful day with lovely weather. Eight people were arrested by police for refusing to show proof of their identity or for other breaches of the security measures in force around the royal visits. They were all later released without charge.

Celebrations
Queen's Day is the royal family's annual occasion to meet the people face-to-face, and since her accession to the throne in 1980 Queen Beatrix has celebrated the day by visiting each of the 12 provinces in turn.

All over the Netherlands celebrations began last night, with street parties, concerts and performances. The day itself is marked by children's games and flea markets in city centres, more street parties and concerts, and a general carefree atmosphere.
