MPs vote in favour of 100 percent bonus tax

Published on 22 March 2011 - 6:10pm
More about:

MPs have voted in favour of a 100 percent tax on all financial bonuses since 2008 at Dutch banks bailed out with state funds.

The motion, which affects the ABN, ING, SNS Reaal and Aegon, was put forward by the Freedom Party and supported by the Labour Party and Socialist Party. If this is not possible the parties want the cabinet to refuse to allow the whole amount to be tax deductable for corporate tax.

Finance Minister Jan Kees de Jager advised against passing the motion. He says it will lead to long drawn out legal battles that cannot be won, because such a measure contravenes the constitution.

Labour Party MP Ronald Plasterk does not believe the measure can be enforced, but voted in favour of the motion to force the government to do something about the bonus culture at banks.
