Marines to escort Dutch cargo ship

Published on 16 September 2011 - 7:59pm
More about:

Heavily-armed marines are to escort yet another Dutch cargo ship against pirates. In early October, the Mighty Servant 3, owned by shipping company Dockwise, will set sail, along with two tugboats, from Singapore and head for the United Arab Emirates.

The defence ministry made the announcement as Dutch marines boarded another Dutch vessel leaving Singapore for the UAE.

Last March saw the first Dutch marines escort a number of vulnerable Dutch merchant ships to protect them against attacks form Somali pirates.

The defence ministry plans to provide 20 ships with a military escort in 2012, according to the government budget released on Thursday.
