Majority oppose raising pension age

Published on 11 June 2011 - 8:09pm
More about:

A majority of the Dutch oppose an agreement to raise the pension age to 67, a survey finds.

Forty-three percent of respondents say they are against, with 37 percent in favour, an opinion poll conducted by Maurice de Hond among over 3,000 people suggests.

Twenty percent say they have no opinion on the matter.

Seventy-six percent of Socialist Party voters, 63 percent of Freedom Party voters and 50 percent of Labour voters are against, as are 57 percent of FNV union members.

Around 1.4 million FNV members must still endorse the agreement the government, the employers’ federation and trade unions struck on Friday.

More than 70 percent of those surveyed say they want a referendum on the matter, a view that is supported by a majority in each party.

Under the plan, the state pension age will go up to 66 in 2020 and to 67 by 2025.

Sixty percent of respondents agree with the proposed measure.

Only a majority of Socialist Party and Freedom Party voters oppose the plan, as do both parties.
