Major Dutch ecstasy factory raided

Published on 9 October 2011 - 2:18pm
More about:

Police have dismantled a workshop in Schiedam near Rotterdam where the drug ecstasy was being produced.

Officers discovered a modern pill-making machine in warehouse premises on an industrial estate in the town on Saturday. It had a capacity to produce 100,000 pills per hour.

About 110,000 ecstasy pills were found packed in bags. Dozens of kilos of ingredients for making the drug were discovered in the warehouse kitchen.

Dearer abroad
In the Netherlands, ecstasy pills sell for around three euros each, but abroad the price can be far higher. The police estimate the Schiedam drugs haul to be worth over one million euros.

Officers also came across 15,000 joints (marijuana cigarettes) which are thought to have been intended for Dutch ‘coffeeshops’ – outlets where small amounts of cannabis products are allowed to be sold.

Two men were arrested following the raid.
