Maastricht halts medical internship in Ghana

Published on 14 April 2011 - 7:57pm
More about:

The University of Maastricht will no longer send medical students to Ghana, the school announced Thursday. The decision comes after three of the school's interns who were training in Ghana were endangered during rebel attacks two weeks ago.

Since 2004, groups of medical students have been sent for an 18 week training course at the West Gonja District Hospital in Damongom. Additional students were scheduled to join the training in August but their trip has been called off.

Pauline Vluggen, head of academic affairs at the university, said the program will not resume until they can ensure the students' safety. Current political unrest in neighbouring Ivory Coast does not improve the university’s position, she said.
